View All ChartersTop 5 Sandbar Locations in Key West
The Florida Keys are home to some of the most stunning sandbars in the world. Here are the top spots your captain may visit on your charter — conditions and tides permitting.
Jewfish Basin Sandbar
The most popular sandbar in the Key West area and a favorite stop on our 4-hour trips. Jewfish Basin sits in calm, protected waters with brilliant turquoise shallows perfect for wading, swimming, and floating. The water is typically knee-to-waist deep and crystal clear — you can see straight to the sandy bottom. It's the quintessential Florida Keys sandbar experience.
Mud Keys Sandbar
A remote and breathtaking stretch of white sand surrounded by the backcountry waters of the Lower Keys. The Mud Keys offer a true 'middle of nowhere' feeling — no crowds, no noise, just open sky and turquoise water as far as the eye can see. This is one of the most photogenic spots in the entire Florida Keys and a highlight of our longer charters.
Woman Key Sandbar
Tucked away near the uninhabited Woman Key island, this sandbar is a hidden gem known only to locals and experienced captains. The surrounding waters are rich with marine life — snorkelling here often reveals starfish, rays, and tropical fish. It's a perfect blend of sandbar relaxation and natural wonder.
Snipe Keys Sandbar
Part of the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, the Snipe Keys area features shallow flats and sandbars that attract incredible birdlife and marine wildlife. The remote location means you'll often have the sandbar entirely to yourselves. A favourite for guests who want a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience.
Boca Grande Key Sandbar
Located near the western tip of the Florida Keys, Boca Grande Key is surrounded by stunning sandbars and clear shallow water. The area is known for excellent shelling, calm swimming conditions, and spectacular views of the open Gulf. A great option for families and groups looking for a longer adventure.

A Natural Wonder on Your Doorstep
Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge
Many of our sandbar trips pass through or near the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge — a stunning 200,000-acre protected area in the backcountry waters of the Lower Florida Keys. Established in 1938, it is one of the largest refuges in the eastern United States and home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife.
Our captains are passionate about the local ecosystem and will point out wildlife along the way. The refuge is a protected area — we observe all wildlife from a respectful distance to ensure these incredible animals remain undisturbed for generations to come.
Keep your eyes open and you may spot:
- Great white herons — the refuge's iconic resident, found nowhere else in the world in such numbers
- Roseate spoonbills, reddish egrets, and osprey
- West Indian manatees grazing in the shallow flats
- Bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave
- Sea turtles surfacing in the calm backcountry waters
- Nurse sharks and rays gliding beneath the tiki boat
